Yan Xu

Yan (Billy) is a PhD researcher with the Design and Manufacturing Futures Lab at the University of Bristol. He was awarded a master’s degree in engineering with management from the University of Bristol, focusing on sustainable energy.

His current research focuses on the development and optimisation of advanced layered bone scaffolds using 3D printing technology in conjunction with CT image-assisted design to provide effective, patient-specific treatments for patients with osteochondral injuries and osteoarthritis. This work involves addressing key challenges in biocompatibility, mechanical properties, cellular integration and vascularisation to create scaffolds that mimic the complex structure and function of natural osteochondral tissue. The research also requires medical image segmentation to capture the parameters of the design.
